Chief Justice Chuck Malone’s entire career has prepared him with a solid foundation to serve the people of Alabama as Chief Justice and to uphold the state constitution and the Constitution of the United States of America.
Chief Justice Chuck Malone graduated from the Cumberland School of Law on the campus of Samford University in Birmingham and practiced law for 20 years before being elected to the bench. As a successful attorney, he handled cases in both state and federal courts and represented individuals, small businesses, corporations, banks, and credit unions.
Chief Justice Malone is a lifelong Republican who was first elected to the bench in 2000 as a circuit judge and was re-elected in 2006. His colleagues twice elected him as presiding judge which gave him responsibility for the management of the courts. In more than a decade on the bench, Malone earned the reputation of being a tough but fair judge while presiding over thousands of criminal cases including capital murder, rape, sexual abuse and drug trafficking. In addition to his vast experience in criminal law, Chief Justice Malone also presided over all types of civil cases including medical malpractice, product liability, fraud, breach of contract, and accident cases.
Malone’s legal knowledge and experience has afforded him the opportunity to serve in other roles as well. As as an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama Law School for 6 years, he taught trial advocacy to aspiring young attorneys. He also taught business law at the University of Alabama School of Commerce and Business for 4 years. Chief Justice Malone was also selected to instruct cadets at the law enforcement academy for 8 years and has served as a guest lecturer at the Alabama Sherriff’s Association, Cumberland School of Law, and the University of Alabama.
In 2010, Governor Robert Bentley appointed Malone as Chief of Staff where he served as the senior most advisor to the administration. On August 1, 2011, Governor Bentley announced that he had appointed Chuck Malone as Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court after the resignation of Sue Bell Cobb.
Chief Justice Malone has been married to his wife, Terri, for 35 years and they have 2 children. He is a member of the First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa where he serves as a Deacon.
